BULKY BOY IN THE NEWS - LA JOLLA LIGHT - MARCH 27, 2008
At a time when most of his peers are firmly ensconced in their careers or enjoying a life of early retirement, La Jollan Kit Kantner is opening new doors and boldly going where few others have been successful; head on into the action sports/lifestyle market. But what else would you except from a guy whose 50th birthday party was a full-blown pirate themed bash? The guy lives large; with a sense of humor to match so in a way what came next for Kit made perfect sense.
In early 2000 Kit and his wife Julie went to San Francisco to visit an old childhood friend. “Mark Ruyle was the man at WindanSea back in the 70’s”, explains Kit. “He was my best friend, an amazing surfer, in great shape, full of attitude, but a good person. He moved away in the early 80’s, got a desk job, and started a family. When I saw him again, I was a little shocked at how his physique had, shall we say, transformed and I called him a ‘bulky boy’.” They laughed and remarked what a great name “Bulky Boy’ could be as a brand.
Kit returned home and decided to trademark the name. The moniker lay dormant for another 6 years.
In 2006 Kit began to seriously revisit the idea of branding Bulky Boy. “The news was all about the expanding American waistline. I began noticing large, bald guys everywhere. I became aware of how my own physique had changed over the years, but not my attitude.” It’s this notion that would become the ideology behind the brand.
The logo was born shortly thereafter. “The particular man I was modeling the brand after was fashion conscious in terms of his appearance and current with the trends, like the shaved head look. There was a direct correlation between the size of the guy and how many neck rolls he had. It was Julie who came up with the idea of the shoulder representing strength. To represent our principles behind the brand we knew the caricature had to be universally encompassing”, says Kit. He hired graphic designer, Tim Lowman to put these ideas together and what evolved was the transcendent icon currently in use today.
Still unsure of its market potential, Kit approached a relative that was enrolled in Brigham Young University, Hawaii and asked him to perform a market analysis.
What transpired in Hawaii would dispel any doubts of the brand’s future viability. “We were embraced by the Hawaiians as a brand, says Kit. “It was all very grassroots in the beginning. We got involved in community events and street fairs….and donated everything back to BYU.” That generosity has paid back 10 fold, with Hawaii currently being Bulky Boy’s largest retail area to date.
“Bulky Boy” initially marketed to an older, plus-sized demographic but the story behind the brand has broadened (no pun intended!) it’s appeal to the more modest sized consumer as well. “We really began as a company that provided quality, stylish casual clothing for the plus size market. Our smallest size was XL (one neck roll) going up to a 6X (massive). Now we have requests to produce all the way down to medium for the younger guy with the bulky attitude who thinks like an action hero.”
If you think the brand is all about embracing the couch potato lifestyle, think again.
“Bulky Boy empowers men to be men”, claims Kit. “We speak to guys like myself who, yeah, we’ve gotten older, we’re not in the same shape we were 25 years ago, but we’re not afraid to keep charging, be it surfing, playing sports or living life. We are the alpha males, at the top of the food chain. We live by a code of strength and honor. The Bulky Boy customer looks after his fellow man, cherishes his family and takes care of those less fortunate.”
Kit attributes this philosophy to his success in Hawaii as well. “The Polynesian people have captured the essence of who we are in terms of their nobility, strength and O’hana attitude toward family. We are a lifestyle brand with its roots in surfing. What an honor to have the Hawaiian people share their culture with us by embracing our brand.”
Bulky Boy continues to give back, providing assistance to the Paskowitz Family Surf Camps for Autistic children, the Honoli’I Paka Keiki surf contest for kids, and locally the WindanSea Surf Club.
Kit’s approach to business is similar to his approach to life, so while he doesn’t take the brand too seriously, he takes the business of the brand very seriously. “It’s all about the roll”, says Kit. “How you roll through life, and how many neck rolls you might collect along the way.” For more information, refer to bulkyboy.com.
